Researchers Provide Benchmark to Defense Against Deepfakes

5/15/26 As generative AI rapidly improves, deepfake detection in content is becoming both harder and more critical. Researchers from Microsoft, Northwestern University, and Witness have introduced the MNW deepfake detection benchmark — a new dataset designed to better reflect the real-world diversity of AI-generated audio, images, and video.

A key challenge is that today’s detection models often perform well in controlled lab environments but fail “in the wild” as generators evolve and content is manipulated. The MNW benchmark aims to close that gap with continuously updated datasets that mirror the rapidly changing generative AI landscape.  For security leaders, this reinforces an important reality that deepfake defense is becoming an ongoing operational capability, not a one-time technical solution.

Considering the potential harm of deepfakes across our organizations and society, it is encouraging to see this team of researchers stepping up to raise standards, support transparency, and help ensure that as generative AI forges ahead, there is a way to assess authenticity at pace.
